I would say the part of Maus that was most filled with the four appeals was The Prisoner on the Hell Planet. Just looking in to the crudely drawn visuals, and a view into how someone would react to the death of his mother screams pathos.
It's pathetic because we see the desperation in all the characters. Art's mother and father are drawn in a sad manner, and Art is drawn in a prisoner's uniform, looking more than depressed. The diction of blaming his mother, and the allusion of the guilt he lives under making him a prisoner, creates a sad, troubled tone.
It's also interesting to see how someone would react instantly to the death of their mother. How they perceive the suicide, and how they tie it into their selves. It is really touching, moving and pathetic at the same time, due to the imagery, diction, use of sharp black lines and more create that sad tone that causes the reader to feel for Art.
