In the first volume of Maus, I found that when he explains that Anja was sickly and nervous throughout her life he is trying to get us to sympathize with her and make us feel bad that she had to go through the holocaust. He explains this on pages 21 and 33 in the first volume. The fact that she was already taking pills and was unwell before going through this ordeal is probably supposed to make us feel very bad for her. In a way it did make me feel bad for her, but it also made me really admire her will to live. The fact that she was sickly and made it out of the holocaust alive really says something about her character. She does end up taking her own life many years later, and I think this is supposed to make us feel sympathy as well, but for Art and Vladek. She left them to deal with that pain and knowing this is does make me feel bad for the both of them. Overall, pathos was used a lot in this book, but those were very prominent parts in my opinion.
