Blog week 7

The part of chapter 6 of Eating Animals that had the greatest impact on me was when he talked about the feces infested pig farms. He went into a lot of depth about how the pig feces is handled and what exactly is in it. Once he got into what the workers do with it, is when it got harder to read. The fact that some company let it go into a river disgusted me and it’s hard to think that people just let that happen.

            He also brings up how some people that work there are just overcome with the smell or the little story he told up one person diving into the pool of feces after the one another trying to save each other but being so overwhelmed they all drowned and died. Then he goes on by talking about how people residing close to the factory farms (not by choice most of the time) are having their health compromised by the chemicals and gases coming from the untreated feces. That hit me because these people are not choosing to live by these factories and they can’t do anything about it but their own lives are at risk because of the carelessness of the factory farm owners. Then when he brings up that the piglets are sometimes apart of the feces, that’s when I almost had to stop reading because thinking of little baby pigs being “bashed” and then thrown aside really bothers me. Especially, when he talks about the pile of piglets and some can still be left alive.
